Future direction
TeleDr currently works with a remote nurse or paramedic so that they can examine the patient for the doctor. TeleDr clinics, comprised of a nurse or medic with a 3G phone, internet connection and telemedical equipment are planned to be set up all over remote Australia in towns that do not have doctors.
TeleDr is not available to members of the public in remote areas at the moment. As telemedicine equipment and technology becomes available to members of the public this may change
TeleDr inventions such as the ear-thermo-cam that takes pictures of the eardrum and other inventions such as electronic stethoscopes are becoming more available.
In the future, we hope TeleDr will be able to provide members of the public in remote areas with their own tele-diagnostic set including:
- An electronic BP machine (widely available)
- An electronic stethoscope

- An ear-thermo-cam

This will enable the doctor to examine a public patient through the web or phone camera, listen to your heart look in your ears and throat and check your BP.
TeleDr is continuing to design simple tele-diagnostic sets, that may soon be bundled and sold to remote sites such as farms. This will allow people without medical training to get the required information to the TeleDr. TeleDr review inventions such as the ” medipod “ which may supplement TeleDr clinics in remote Australia.
You are holidaying in remote Australia for example, Kakadu and suddenly your husband feels ill. You could abandon the holiday and fly home but it may not be serious. So instead you step into the medipod and call up TeleDr. Using video-conferencing, you sit face-to-face with a practitioner who observes your husband and demonstrates how to apply the stethoscope and vital signs monitor in the medipod. The doctor listens carefully and, after a few minutes, the diagnosis is clear and you go about your day having avoided abandoning your holiday. The medipod is not that far away, but it is still not a cost effective option and much more expensive than having a remote nurse or paramedic do this. TeleDr will continue to research and innovate to bring quality health services to remote Australia.
